Pussy Riot Solidarity Action!

o-PUSSY-RIOT-RALLY-570

One year ago three members of Pussy Riot were sentenced to 2 years labor in penal colonies in Russia. This Saturday, we gather in masked solidarity to show these women, as well as others in Pussy Riot and around the world, that they are not forgotten. Meet outside of the General Consulate of Russia, 9 East 91st St. Bring signs, wear a bright neon mask and colorful clothes!

Pussy Riot, a feminist, anti-authoritarian, punk art performance group, with their faces clad in neon-colored balaclavas and wearing colorful clothing, sang a protest song entitled, “Virgin Mary, Redeem Us of Putin,” on Feb. 21 at Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow. The song criticizes the support shown by some representatives of the Orthodox Church to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and calls on the Virgin Mary to become a feminist and banish Putin.

Two of the members of Pussy Riot are currently in labor camps. Both Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina have been recently denied parole hearings, while Yekaterina Samutsevich was freed on probation last year. In recent months Maria had been on hunger strike in order to obtain permission to be present at her own parole hearing and her general treatment in the prison colony.

Pussy Riot are essentially conceptual artists. This is what makes them threatening – it is not possible to imprison a concept. Anybody can be Pussy Riot. Pussy Riot are a reminder that revolution always begins first in culture, in the radical act. In the society of the spectacle, that act – Pussy Riot’s sporadic performances – get YouTube hits and retweets. In these days of Twitter shallows, remember it is the virtual world that has pushed Pussy Riot into the spotlight and in the real world that they are in prison.
